Chapter 14

Got it Bad for the Good-Looking Mobster

~ Cassandra ~

Cassandra had been with Viktor for almost three months. She had fallen into a comfortable routine. The mercurial mobster liked to live a quiet life. He never threw lavish parties, did drugs, or acted out. He left every morning in his armored SUV, scrolling through his e-mails as his driver drove the selected route for the day. From everything she could see, the man seemed more like the CEO of a private corporation than a mobster. He worked hard and spent all his free time at the firing range, with her, or plotting to take over the world in his private study with a couple of his assistants.

Cassandra noted with some amusement that Viktor’s habits were definitely the habits of a man who ran a large criminal enterprise. He was detail oriented, absolutely fanatical about security, obsessed constantly about his business, and spent lavishly on his woman. His habits felt very familiar to her, having been raised by someone with similar inclinations.

She knew he loved the watch she bought for him. He wore it every single day, and put it on his bedside table at night. Viktor was the type of man who cared for what was important to him. He had a sentimental side that really appealed to her and it was evidenced in the thousand and one small things he did that showed he cared. He always posted his little one’s drawings on his fridge himself. Sometimes he even taped them tackily over picture frames around the apartment, making them seem more like art. It always put a smile on Viktorija’s little face. Sometimes he cut her toast into bite-size pieces and spelled love with them or arranged them in a heart. It was strange to see her big, scary mobster stressing over getting the placement perfect.

Always having been a dancer, classical ballet was Cassandra’s favorite form of dance. She enjoyed teaching Viktorija and her little protégé absolutely loved her pretty pink outfit with the wispy pink tutu. Her eyes shone with excitement the first time Cassandra tied the pink satin ribbons up her legs.

The first time Viktor had seen them practicing together, the look on his face was pure adoration. He had immediately made arrangements for them to have a large private room at a local dance studio. They practiced every other day. Sometimes the other children joined them. Viktorija was quite gregarious, and easily made friends.

Viktor had introduced her at the Moscow Children’s Hospital. They eagerly offered her a temporary position providing cardiac care to children. It took the staff and other physicians a while to warm up to her. She couldn’t figure out whether it was because she didn’t speak fluent Russian, she was a foreigner, or because her boyfriend was the scariest man alive. Whatever it was, they eventually got to know her and warmed up a bit. Now she even had a couple of friends. Inga was a neurosurgeon and Kary was a radiologist.

Over the last few weeks, Cassandra began to suspect something unusual was going on.
